For all of those living, visiting or studying in Austin, Texas, the Blanton Museum of Art is presenting a show regarding Mid Century Modern design in Latin America. The influence of Modernism, especially in countries like Brazil, is remarkable for the intertwined nature with nationalism and economic aspirations. Being American and Eurocentric, I have to admit to being a little lightweight when it comes to developments south of the border. Some places are more familiar than others such as the building programs in Mexico City and in the newly erected Brasilia. If I had a chance to visit the Blanton Museum of Art for this exhibition, I surely would. Also, we can not forget Oscar Niemeyer, the great Brazilian architect who was instrumental in the design of Brasilia.
