I highly recommend this book if you are interested in mid-century architecture. This is a complete documentation of the entire Case Study House Program, wonderfully illustrated. The Case Study House Program exemplifies the essence of the modernist impulse in architecture and its’ predilection for social consciousness. After all, the basis for this project was not only to fulfill a need for housing, but to make it available and accessible and aesthetically valuable. At nearly $70, this book is well worth the cost.

Although the American public largely rejected the use of prefabricated steel and other construction methodologies of the Case Study House Program, the designs were highly influential in terms of the design of mid-century structures. In short, this book is a joy.

I am planning an entire series on each of the houses that appear in this book. This link leads you to the first article on the Bailey House, Case Study House #21.
