Why The World Is Obsessed With Midcentury Modern Design

My response:

I don’t recall Mid Century Modern furniture uncomfortable or cheap, no more so than any other style of furniture. Have you ever sat in an Early American chair that nearly killed your back? Reproductions of say, the Cesca Chair by Marcel Breuer, can vary widely depending upon the type of construction and the materials used. I really believe that some of this is a false memory and an excuse. If one doesn’t like something, just say so and maybe offer why.

My take on why Mid Century Modern has gained popularity is because of the excessively boring styles of the 21st century. In my city there are tracks and tracks of these grotesque beige with red tile roofed things that go on forever. Color is simply a variation on gray. The finishes are a lesson in dreary. The neighborhoods are in themselves a definition of conformity.

In the 50s and 60s not many HOAs existed. One felt less constrained by convention. Governments were less intrusive and buildings were less under the thumb of regulation. We see the severity of repression with the Tiny House Movement. People see the mid century as a time of experimentation and excitement with a certain level of optimism and color. Still, many of the designs are remarkable, and whether some like it or not, many of the contemporary designs of today find their foundation in this period. It is also to some degree a rejection of the excesses of contemporary modernism which stretches buildings in all sorts of directions and turns museums into extremely large metal garbage dumps.
